GOLD COAST 2018

The 2018 Commonwealth Games (Gold Coast 2018) were held in Australia between April 4th and 15th. It was the first time a major multi-sport event achieved gender equality by having an equal number of events for males and female athletes. There were more than 4,400 athletes, including 300 para-athletes, participating at the event. One of the para-athletes was GoGetDem’s own Raphael Botsyo Nkegbe who qualified for the finals of the men's 1500metres (T45) wheelchair racing.

In addition to impressive results and abilities in athletics Raphael, who is also a three-time Paralympian, was appointed as the General Captain for all 70 athletes representing Team Ghana. This is an incredible honor for one of the most senior of all the athletes at the Games and the first time in history Ghana has appointed a para-athlete as Team Captain.

This is such a significant step in that through the power of sports there has been equality between physically challenged and able-bodied athletes. Raphael has always been a strong voice and advocate for persons with disabilities and this has allowed him to transcend this role and become a voice and leader for all athletes. We could not be prouder of his incredible accomplishments.

Team Ghana arrived home on Friday, April 20 with one medal (bronze in boxing) and placing 39th out of the 71 countries that participated.
